D + S paradox · one of the four paradox types
DpS personality type (The Velvet Hammer)
“Soft touch. Crushing force.”
Action and stability in creative friction.

How this type works with each style
Written to you as the DpS. If you are the other person in the pair, read your own style's section for what this type needs from you.
DDpS and D (Dominance)
A pure D-type looks at you and sees a kindred spirit who confusingly hesitates at moments they would charge ahead. You look at a pure D-type and see someone who breaks things you would have protected. The first interaction feels familiar: you match their pace, their directness, their results orientation. The friction emerges when you slow down for people and they do not understand why. 'Why are we having this conversation? Just make the call.' Because the call affects six people who trust me, and I am not going to blindside them.
What this type can say: “I share your urgency on this. I want to make sure the approach does not create problems we will spend three months cleaning up. Give me twenty-four hours to talk to the people affected and I will come back with a plan we can execute immediately.”
IDpS and I (Influence)
I-types sense your warmth and light up. They see your steady side and think they have found an ally who will support their energy and enthusiasm. They are half right. You enjoy their presence and their ability to read a room. But your decisive side underneath is running a performance assessment that the I-type has no idea is happening. When you eventually provide direct feedback, they experience whiplash: 'I thought we were friends.' You are friends. Friends who produce results.
What this type can say: “I love the energy you are bringing to this. I also need us to get specific about next steps and owners. Can we take the best of what you have outlined and turn it into a plan with dates?”
SDpS and S (Steadiness)
S-types recognize something familiar in you and feel immediately comfortable. They sense your steady side and trust it. What they do not see is your decisive side underneath, and when it appears, they experience it as a violation of the implicit contract they thought you shared. 'I thought you were like me.' You are like them. You are also something else. The D-S paradox means you understand S-types at a cellular level, which makes you their most effective leader and their most confusing one.
What this type can say: “I know this change is coming faster than is comfortable. I want to give you time to process. Here is what is happening, why, and what will stay the same. Can we check in tomorrow after you have had a chance to think it through?”
CDpS and C (Conscientiousness)
C-types share your task focus but not your relational instinct. They see data where you see people. They want precision where you want momentum. The interaction works when you let them bring rigor to your decisions without letting their process freeze your timeline. The C-type respects your drive but is confused by your patience: 'Why are we spending time on feelings when the data is clear?'
What this type can say: “I trust your analysis. Here is what I need: your recommendation with the top three risks, by Thursday. I want to announce Friday, so if there is something that should change my mind, this is the window.”
