Why Catching Stress Early Matters
The lesson DISC Under Stress showed how each style changes under pressure. A person who leads with D pushes harder, a person who leads with I gets scattered, a person who leads with S goes quiet, and a person who leads with C digs into detail. By the time those changes are obvious to everyone, the person has often been under strain for a while. When you notice the signs early, a small change is often enough to help.
Stress usually builds in stages. Early on, a person's strengths get a little louder. In the middle, the strengths start to cost the people around them. Late, the person runs out of their usual way of coping and may act in ways that surprise everyone, including themselves. Each style shows these stages differently, and each recovers through different things.
This lesson shows the early, middle and late signs for each style, what helps each one recover and what makes it worse, how to build a recovery plan for your own style, and how to help a colleague, friend or partner when you see the signs in them.
Every style has an early warning sign that looks like one of its strengths turned up a notch. Learn yours, so you can start recovering while the stress is still small.
This lesson is about everyday stress at work and at home. If stress has gone on for a long time, is affecting your sleep, health or safety, or you feel hopeless, talk to a doctor or another professional you trust. In the United States, you can call or text 988 at any hour to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. If anyone is in immediate danger, call 911. Outside the United States, call your local emergency number or a crisis line where you live.
